About Open Keys

My main instrument these days is the piano, but my musical background started with the guitar. One of the things I like about the guitar is the ability to use open tunings. Switching to an unfamiliar tuning breaks muscle memory and challenges you to approach the instrument in a new way, rather than relying on expectations of what notes belong together.

Pianos are amazing, but they are locked in place. I wanted to build a tool that changes how I approach the keyboard, bringing a sense of unpredictability to the piano, but with enough control that it’s not completely random. I found that it not only works as well as I hoped it would, but that it also gives me a new appreciation when I go back to my piano.
